 STATE FOOD SAFETY INDEX (SFSI)

FSSAI has developed State Food Safety Index to measure the performance of states on various parameters of Food Safety.  


 first State Food Safety Index

for the year 2018-19 was announced on the first-ever World Food Safety Day on 7th June 2019.


This index is based on performance of State/ UT on five significant parameters, namely -

  • Human Resources and Institutional Data, 
  • Compliance, 
  • Food Testing – Infrastructure and Surveillance, 
  • Training & Capacity Building and
  •  Consumer Empowerment. 
The Index is a dynamic quantitative and qualitative benchmarking model that provides an objective framework for evaluating food safety across all States/UTs.


What is FSSAI?

  • Established under Food Safety and Standards, 2006, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) handles food-related issues including ensuring the safe availability of food for human consumption. 
  • It is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare that is responsible for promoting and protecting public health through various regulations and supervisions of food safety.
