India, its SDG pledge goal, and the strategy to apply

India, its SDG pledge goal, and the strategy to apply first meeting of Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors under India’s G20 Presidency 1  The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, while addressing the first meeting of Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors under India’s G20 Presidency 2   held on February 24-25, 2023, expressed concern that “progress on Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) seems to be slowing down”.  3  Regardless of the global progress that has been made to date, the sheer निरा  population size of India means that realising Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at a global scale is intrinsically आंतरिक रूप से  tied to the success of India.  4  There is considerable confidence in India becoming the third largest economy in the world over the next decade. 5  However, translating this growth into progress on social and human development must be equally valued.  India’s progress is mixed 1 The SDGs framework 🥝...

women's participation

The women’s reservation Bill cannot wait any longer Even though women have been breaking the glass ceiling of patriarchy 1 politics in every sector, politics is the arena where women find it the most challenging to find space.  2  India may have achieved suffrage मताधिकार  early, but women still face significant barriers to political participation and do not have the right to govern. It is disheartening to witness that even 75 years after Independence, Parliament lacks substantial representation from half the population, with women holding just 14% of the seats. . A regression after a promising start 1 Women played a crucial role in India’s fight for independence by organising demonstrations, leading rallies, and raising awareness.  2 There were numerous female representatives in the Constituent Assembly as well .  🥝Just a decade ago, three of India’s largest States, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh, were in the spotlight...

Rajasthan’s initiative on a gig workers’

Rajasthan’s initiative on a gig workers’  welfare board heralds अग्रदूतों good tidings With an estimated eight million people employed in an industry built on the back of the smartphone revolution, “gig” work has become a major source of jobs for youth in India.  It goes without saying that in a country where informal labour and unemployment have defined the nature of the jobs market in the last decade, the gig economy has been a beneficial outlet of employment.  This is especially true of youth and migrant workers as they seek a ready and quick means of securing finances and flexible hours — an option used by informal workers who have used gigs for moonlighting. Mobiles and apps  With growing smartphone use and a reliance on apps for daily needs and purposes, the gig economy is only set to flourish फलना-फूलना  in terms of usage and opportunities.  Yet, increased competition among platforms and the availability of a cheap labour force have led to a lowering...

What is genome sequencing?

What is genome sequencing? The story so far: The Department of Biotechnology recently said that the exercise to sequence 10,000 Indian human genomes and create a database under the Centre-backed Genome India Project is about two-thirds complete. About 7,000 Indian genomes have already been sequenced of which 3,000 are available for public access to researchers. What is genome sequencing? The human genome is the entire set of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) residing in the nucleus of every cell of the human body.  It carries the complete genetic information responsible for the development and functioning of an organism.  The DNA   consists of a double-stranded molecule built up by four bases.  While the sequence of base pairs is identical in all humans, there are differences in the genome of every human being that makes them unique. The process of deciphering the order of base pairs, to decode the genetic fingerprint of a human is called genome sequencing. In 1990, a gro...

The many benefits of marriage equality

The many benefits of marriage equality Last week, the Supreme Court started hearing petitions from lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) petitioners seeking same-sex marriage equality.  The hearings were widely covered by the media in India because the issue of marriage equality for LGBTQ+ persons is sometimes seen as controversial. I am a happily married lesbian who chose to legally marry my same-sex partner in the U.K. in 2011 because I did not have the right to marry her in India,  even though the institution of marriage is of fundamental importance to Indian society.  In India, getting married is one of the highlights of becoming an adult.  Remaining single and not being married is frowned upon by the entire family as married couples are generally seen as more accepted and respectable than a non-married couple in our traditional culture. Therefore, excluding LGBTQ+ persons from marriage excludes us from full benefits of participating in family ...

The EU’s new crypto-legislation

The EU’s new crypto-legislation What kind of crypto assets does MiCA seek to regulate?  What are the regulatory requirements imposed on the crypto industry in the EU?  How has the law been received?  What are the aspects left out by the regulation?  How does it compare to cryptocurrency regulation in India? The story so far : The European Parliament, the legislative body of the 27-country block European Union, has approved the world’s first set of comprehensive rules to bring largely unregulated cryptocurrency markets under the ambit of regulation by government authorities.  The regulation, called the Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA), will come into force after formal approval by member states. Why regulation? Having a comprehensive framework like MiCA for 27 countries in Europe not only harmonize / सामंजस्य the crypto industry  but also gives the EU a competitive edge in its growth compared to the U.S. or the U.K. which lack regulatory clarity.  More...

UN reports ‘off the charts’ melting of glaciers

UN reports ‘off the charts’ melting of glaciers The UN agency says the last eight years have been the warmest ever with concentration of green house gases hitting new peaks.  The world’s glaciers melted at dramatic speed last year and saving them is effectively a lost cause, the United Nations reported on Friday, as climate change indicators once again hit record highs. The last eight years have been the warmest ever recorded, while concentrations of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide hit new peaks, the UN’s World Meteorological Organization said. “Antarctic sea ice fell to its lowest extent on record and the melting of some European glaciers was, literally, off the charts,” the WMO spelled out as it launched its annual climate overview. Sea levels are also at a record high, having risen by an average of 4.62 millimetres per year between 2013 and 2022 — double the rate it was between 1993 and 2002. Record high temperatures were recorded in the oceans — where around 90% of the ...

River that originate from Western ghat

Rivers that originate from Western ghat West flowing:  1  The rivers that originate in Western Ghats and flow towards west are  🥝Periyar,  🥝Bharathappuzha,  🥝Netravati,  🥝Sharavathi,  🥝Mandovi etc. 2  The west flowing rivers of Western Ghats are fast-moving, owing to the short distance travelled and steeper gradient. 3  This makes Western Ghats more useful in terms of production of hydroelectricity. The lesser-known battles of Maoist women / surrendered cadres All is not well in the Communist Party of India (Maoist)  which, besides waging युद्ध छेड़ना an armed struggle to capture political power, also claims to fight for gender equality.  The Maoists profess मानना  discipline and integrity, but exploitation of women in the party is a stark reality.  Women who join the party in the hope of bringing about a “revolution” for the proletariat दरिद्रतम श्रमिक वर्ग and the landless class are often subject to the same structural violence that they are supposed to fight. Women constitute 35%-40% of the total party members  but their representation in the Central Committee and the Dandakaranya Special Zonal Committee (DKSZC) is negligible.  As per recent reports, only one woman cadre, Sheela Marandi alias Hema, of Jharkhand is a Central Committee member out of a total of more than 20 members,  and only two women cadres — Pothula Kalpana alias Mainakka and...

Foreign policy of soudi Arab

Tv channel and Twitter

Television channels hardly seem to be enablers of democratic ethos and debate More often than not, television news shows in India feature a hashtag (#).  Media channels have one while their shows have another. One must not forget the anchors who often remind viewers about using these hashtags to engage with them on social media.  Some shows even feature live tweet counts of people using these hashtags during telecasts, while some hand pick and present these tweets in their tickers.  What does this tell us about Indian TV media’s evolution alongside social media? Of course, digital platforms provide a means to constantly engage with viewers, which would otherwise not be possible via TV media.  On the other hand, given the system’s framework, one can never be sure if such engagement is with genuine users. disinformation Deen Freelon (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) and Chris Wells (Boston University) note the rise of disinformation, suggesting that social...

New amendment rules on intermediary guidelines 2023 good or bad

New amendment rules on intermediary guidelines amount to censorship  Express measures to curb misinformation, called “false news” and the somewhat inaccurate “fake news”, are a must.  However, this raises the question   whether the Union government or its divisions can be the regulating entity ? fact-check unit  In the IT (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Amendment Rules, 2023, the Union government has added a provision of a fact-check unit to identify fake or false or misleading online content related to the government.  Against such content identified by this unit, intermediaries, such as social media companies or net service providers, will have to take action or risk losing their “safe harbour” protections in Section 79 of the IT Act, which allows intermediaries to avoid liabilities for what third parties post on their websites.  This is unacceptable and problematic  Also, Section 69A of the IT Act, 2000 elucidates  व्‍या...

KOSHY NEW DELHI India has at least 3,167 tigers, according to estimates from the latest tiger census made public on Sunday. There were 2,967 tigers recorded in 2018, and 2,226 in 2014. Sunday’s figures were provisional and could be revised, an official involved with the census told The Hindu. Western Ghats decline The tiger population ha...
