Hundreds of workers hit the streets of Purulia in West Bengal on Friday demanding pending wages under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).
The protesters gathered in front of the District Magistrate’s office under the banner of the Paschim Banga Khet Majoor Samity (PBKMS).
जनवरी के पैसा अभी तक नही मिला
“I have not received wages amounting to ₹8,000. The last time I worked under the 100-day employment scheme was in January this year,” says Dipali Mahato, a 35-year-old protester.
पैसा नही मिलने से माइग्रेशन करना पड़ रहा Ms. Mahato, a mother of two and resident of Podlara village in Purulia I block, said her husband had migrated for work to Ranchi as they were not receiving payments under the scheme.
Anuradha Talwar of PBKMS said workers have to suffer because of the tussle between the Centre and State government over non-disbursal of funds to pay workers under the scheme.
केंद्र सरकार की तरफ से कितना रुपया बाकी है
“Wages of workers amounting to ₹2,800 crore are pending with the Centre. The wages are directly transferred to the account of beneficiaries. In this case, work has already been completed. The workers are suffering because of the non-payment of wages,” Ms. Talwar said.
Talks in Delhi
During the day, representatives of the NREGA Sangarsh Samity and the PBKMS met the director of the MGNREGA in New Delhi.
PBKMS representatives said the director said the State government had not submitted a labour budget in connection with the implementation of the scheme.
According to the Central government and the Bharatiya Janata Party leadership, the West Bengal government has not conducted the necessary audits for the scheme over the past few years.
Last week, a delegation of Trinamool Congress leaders had met Giriraj Singh, Union Minister of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, in Delhi to take up the issue of non-payment of wages. The leaders demanded that the Centre immediately release around ₹7,100 crore in dues to the State government under the job guarantee scheme.
The State government has said that funds have not been disbursed under the MGNREGA since December 2021.
