पल्लास की बिल्ली (Pallas’s cat), जिसे मैनुल (Manul) भी कहा जाता है, एक छोटा जंगली बिल्ली प्रजाति का जानवर है, जो मध्य एशिया के पहाड़ी और घास वाले क्षेत्रों में पाया जाता है। इसका वैज्ञानिक नाम Otocolobus manul है। यह अपनी घनी फर, छोटी टांगों और गोल चेहरे के कारण बहुत अनोखा और आकर्षक दिखता है।

इसकी आंखें अन्य बिल्लियों की तुलना में अलग होती हैं। पुतलियां गोल होती हैं, और कान सिर के बिल्कुल किनारे पर होते हैं, जो इसे शिकार के दौरान छिपने में मदद करते हैं।
3. आवास (Habitat):
पल्लास की बिल्ली मुख्य रूप से मंगोलिया, चीन, तिब्बत, नेपाल और कजाकिस्तान के ठंडे और शुष्क क्षेत्रों में रहती है। यह चट्टानों और गुफाओं में शरण लेती है।
4. आहार (Diet):
यह मुख्य रूप से छोटे स्तनधारियों जैसे पिका (Pika), चूहे, और पक्षियों का शिकार करती है।
5. व्यवहार:
पल्लास की बिल्ली एकांतप्रिय होती है और दिन में कम ही नजर आती है। यह रात को या सुबह-सुबह शिकार करती है।
6. संरक्षण स्थिति (Conservation Status):
IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) के अनुसार, यह “निकट संकटग्रस्त” (Near Threatened) श्रेणी में आती है। इसका शिकार इसकी फर और निवास स्थान के नुकसान के कारण किया जाता है।

• पल्लास की बिल्ली सबसे प्राचीन बिल्ली प्रजातियों में से एक है।
• इसका फर इसे अत्यधिक ठंडे वातावरण में जीवित रहने में मदद करता है।

The Small Ghost of the Mountain
story about the trip to Mongolia written by G. Shaheed, a senior journalist, along with Mr. Ahammed’s photographs was carried by the Frontline magazine in the issue dated June 4, 2021. The chapter is named after the title of that story, The Small Ghost of the Mountain.
The Pallas’s cat is named thus since it is nocturnal and with its white complexion blends seamlessly with its snowy habitat. “Pallas’s cat was the primary focus of that trip, along with Bactrian or double-humped camel and Przewalski’s horse, named after the Russian geographer Nikolay Przewalski,” says Mr. Ahammed.
