About
Covering an area of 11,601 km2, the Chesapeake Bay is the world’s third-largest estuary
and the largest estuary in the United States. Located in the Mid-Atlantic region,
Created
by the submergence of the lower courses of the Susquehanna Riverand its tributaries, it is 193 miles (311 km) long and 3 to 25 miles (5 to 40 km) wide.
The southern part of the bay is bordered by Virginiaand its northern part by Maryland. Its entrance from the Atlantic is flanked by Cape Charles to the north and Cape Henry to the south.

include the James, York, Rappahannock, Potomac, and Patuxent from the west and the Wicomico, Nanticoke, Choptank, and Chester from the east.

History
