NIA may probe death of Meitei children in blast 








WHY IN NEWS ? 


The investigation into the killing of two Meitei children in a “bomb attack” in Manipur’s Bishnupur district on April 7 

is likely to be handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), a senior government official said on Thursday. 


Their father is a Border Security Force (BSF) jawan.

The official said the attackers had not been identified so far and all aspects were being looked into.


At a unified command meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh 



on April 8, it was decided that 

  • curfew would continue in the valley districts. 

  • Security forces and police were asked to be more visible on the streets.

The State government is likely to request the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to halt the withdrawal of 70 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) — around 7,000 personnel — for election-related deployment in other States.

In the past few days, around 40 CAPF companies have been withdrawn from Manipur.


A total shutdown was observed on Thursday -  in the valley areas, including Imphal, and rallies were organised to protest the killings. 

Internet remained suspended -  for the third consecutive day.


Mob attack




Gelmol  CRPF base camp 



Following the killings at Tronglaobi, a mob stormed a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) camp at Gelmol, over one km away, a buffer zone between Meitei and Kuki-Zo areas since 2023, resulting in the death of three protesters in CRPF firing.


Gelmol was earlier a Kuki-Zo village but after ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo people erupted in the State on May 3, 2023, the tribal community was displaced and the village became a CRPF base camp. The nearest Kuki settlement is three km away.




The official said the mob set parts of the CRPF camp on fire, including the dining area, and it was when the protesters tried to loot the armoury that the CRPF personnel opened fire, leading to the death of three civilians.
