What is Gig and Platform Economy?
The term gig economy means a general workforce environment, which includes short-term employment, contractual jobs, and independent contractors.
It is also called freelancer economy, agile workforce, sharing economy, or independent workforce.
The platform economy refers to the trend of commerce increasingly strongly attracted toward and favouring digital platform business models.
Who are Gig Workers?
The new Labour Codes of 2019 defines a gig worker as “A person who performs work or participates in a work arrangement and earns from such activities outside of traditional employer-employee relationship”.
It includes freelancers, workers who are employed on a contractual and project-based basis and short-term work.

In a decisive move to protect the rapidly expanding gig workforce, the Telangana Assembly on Monday passed The Telangana Platform Based Gig Workers (Registration, Social Security and Welfare) Bill, 2026, giving platform-based workers a
- clear social security framework
- and statutory safeguards for the first time.

The government had crafted the legislation after extensive consultations with workers and companies, Labour and Employment Minister G. Vivek Venkataswamy said. “If gig workers are not taken care of, penalties will be imposed on aggregators,” ”.
Bill establishes a Social Security and Welfare Board
with representation of

- persons with disabilities.
State-managed welfare fund
In a major structural shift, aggregators — including delivery, ride-hailing, and service apps — must contribute up to 2% of their transaction value to a State-managed welfare fund.
The corpus will support
- insurance,
- pension,
and - maternity benefits
.
strong grievance redressal system
to protect workers from sudden termination or payment stoppages.
For the first time, companies will be required to maintain full transparency in
- order allocation
- and payment calculations.
